Who is WIC for?

Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or whose pregnancy recently ended.

Infants under 12 months old.

Children under 5 years old.

How can I help the WIC Program work for me?

Keep your WIC appointments. If you can’t keep an appointment, please call your local WIC office right away. The WIC staff works hard to see you at your appointment time, so please try your best to be on time.

Always bring your ID to your WIC appointment. Take your WIC Approved Food List with you to the store or use the WICShopper app to help you shop.

Buy the correct foods and in the correct amounts with your EWIC card.

WIC foods are to be used for the family member on WIC, not the whole family. Foods cannot be returned to the store for money, given away, or sold to someone else, this is considered fraud and will result in penalties.

Be sure to bring the information that the WIC staff needs when they ask for it (proof of ID for the infant, child or self, proof of residency and proof of income for the household).

Tell the WIC staff about any changes in your name, address or phone number.

If you are going to move in state or out of state, please notify your WIC staff.

What can my family and I get from WIC?

Protecting your WIC card and PIN
PIN stands for Personal Identification Number, a four-digit secret code that allows only you to use
your WIC card.

DO:

  • Select your PIN when you get your card by calling customer service.
  • Choose four numbers that are easy for you to remember but hard for someone else to
    guess.
  • Protect your PIN! If someone knows your PIN, they can use your card to get your WIC food,
and that food will not be replaced. If someone finds out your PIN, call customer service to
    change it.
  • If you enter the wrong PIN, you have three more chances to enter the correct number. The card will lock on the fourth incorrect PIN entry. You may reset your PIN immediately or the card will unlock automatically at 12:01 a.m. Central Standard Time the next day.

DO NOT:

  • Write your PIN on your card or keep it in your wallet or purse.
  • Bend or fold your card.
  • Scratch or write on your card.
  • Wash your card or get your card wet.
  • Leave your card near magnets, TVs, microwaves or another magnetic stripe card.
  • Leave your card in hot places like the dashboard of your car.

Shopping with your EWIC card

  • Use your WIC Shopping List and WIC Approved Food List when shopping.
  • The WICShopper app can help you identify WIC-approved foods and understand your
    available food benefits.
  • Select the WIC food items you want to buy. Pay close attention to the approved brands,
    products and sizes.
  • Some retailers have a designated WIC checkout lane.
  • You cannot use the WIC card at self-checkout lanes, for pick-up orders or for online
    shopping.
  • You are allowed to have a proxy shop for you. Talk to your WIC local agency for more
    information.
  • If you are not able to purchase an item you feel should be allowed on WIC, check the size, variety and brand using the WIC Approved Food List. You may also contact the retailer’s customer service desk or your WIC local agency for assistance.

Common reasons you are not able to purchase an item include:

  • Not an approved WIC food.
  • Not a WIC benefit on your shopping list.
  • Benefit already redeemed this month.
  • Fresh produce changes often and may not be properly set up as WIC-approved in the
    retailer’s system.
  • If an item is damaged or expired, it may be exchanged for an identical item.
  • WIC formula may only be returned to a WIC local agency for replacement benefits or exchange.

Checking out with your WIC card

  • Always use your WIC card first if you are using SNAP, credit, debit or cash to pay for other
    things in your transaction.
  • Tell the cashier you are using your WIC card.
  • The cashier will scan each item.
  • Give the cashier any manufacturer coupon or in-store promotions (e.g., buy one get one,
buy one get one reduced, transaction discounts, store loyalty, cents-off).
  • Swipe your card.
  • Enter your 4-digit PIN.
  • The cashier will give you a WIC redemption receipt showing what will be removed from your
benefits with this purchase. Make sure it is correct.
  • Press accept on the PIN pad if the redemption is correct. Press decline if there is a problem.
  • If your fruit and vegetable purchase total is more than your cash value benefit amount, you
can pay the difference in another form of payment such as SNAP, cash, credit or debit.
  • The cashier will give you a WIC receipt. Make sure you have your card and receipt when you leave the store.

What to do if you have issues checking out

Please complete the Retailer and WIC card redemption complaints form. The form will collect
all the needed information for Missouri WIC to research and resolve your issue or complaint.
